CHICLANA DE LA FRONTERA: MONUMENTOS

      

  The most important monument in the history of Chiclana would be what was the most famous temple in the Old Times, the Temple of Hercules-Melkart, that existed in the times of the Phoenicians and Romans in the little island of Sancti Petri. Among the historical characters that visited it were Amilcar Barca and Julio Caesar. In its site was built the Castle of Sancti Petri (18th Century).

  Among the monuments preserved we can point out the following:

THE CONVENT CHURCH OF JESUS NAZARENO
    The most important Baroque work in Chiclana. It was built between the years 1667 and 1674 with the generous donations of the Gaditanian bourgueoisie.In its interior, we can stand out the Baroque retables ( 17th and 18th century) and the processional carving of Jesus Nazareno  In its exterior one can admire its Baroque façade, Genoese, of Carrara marble, that is considered the most beautiful sample of the religious Gaditanian Baroque.

THE CHURCH OF SAN TELMO
    In the site of a hermitage dedicated to Saint Peter Telmo, it was built this church in 1783. It is a typical agustinian construction, with a singular angular bell gable. In its interior we can stand out the retables, some paintings ( the Immaculate of the Mulato) and the image of the Virgin of Los Remedios ( the patron saint of the city ), discovered in 16th century.

THE HERMITAGE OF SANTA ANA.
       Dating from the second part of 18th century, It is one of the most representative building in Chiclana. As it stands on the top of a hill., it can be seen from all the region.

It offers interesting views over the Natural Park of the Bay of Cádiz and the municipality of Chiclana and its coast. In its interior are preserved the image of Santa Ana and the Virgen Niña, a work by the sculptor Domingo Giscardi ( 18th century ).

OTHER MONUMENTS AND BUILDINGS OF INTEREST.
    HERMITAGE OF SANTO CRISTO, the oldest temple in Chiclana ( 16th century). In its interior it is preserved the image of  a Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz, of American origin.

    CHURCH OF SAN SEBASTIAN, from 16th century, that has been completely reformed.

   HOSPITAL OF SAN MARTIN, dating from 16th century, that has only preserved its Baroque retables after many reforms.

   THE CLOCK TOWER, from 18th century , known as “Arquillo del Reloj” ( The little arc of the clock). This tower was part of the old Cabildo (Town Council) ,sited in the Plaza Mayor ( Main Square).

   HOUSE PALACE OF CONDE DEL PINAR., from 18th century.

   HOUSE OF THE VEA MURGUÍA FAMILY, also from the 18th century.

   THE TOWN HALL, one of  the first buildings made of concrete in Spain.

   THE WATCH TOWERS OF BERMEJA AND EL PUERCO in the Barrosa beach.

   THE CASTLE OF SANCTI PETRI, a 18th century fortress, except the tower that dates from 16th century.It is built on the little island of the same name in the site of the –Temple of Hercules Melkart.

   TUNNY FISHING TOWN OF SANCTI PETRI, from this century, with a wide fishing activity until 1973.
